In John's Gospel, he introduced Himself in the most authoritative yet controversial way possible. Here, Jesus declares Himself as “I am.” It is also in this gospel that Jesus makes seven statements beginning with the words I am. Each of these “I am” proclamations furthers our understanding of Jesus’ identity and His ministry to the world. They also link Jesus to the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, God revealed His name to Moses: “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:14). For the Jews, they unquestionably understood Jesus was claiming attributes of deity. In other words, He was identifying Himself as God. In this series, we will look at 8 different sayings Jesus said which gives us a better understanding of who He is and allows us to know Him more!
